Dear Coral-list

The Coralassist Lab at Newcastle University, UK is advertising a PhD
position entitled “Unravelling the drivers of coral reproductive phenology
and synchrony.”

Application deadline: 18th January 2021

Project description: This exciting project will utilise a recently
compiled, large database on coral spawning timing, including >6000
individual observations of the time or day of spawning for over 300 coral
species, to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of spawning synchrony
and phenology. These analyses will be complemented by manipulative tank
experiments to test hypotheses about the drivers of spawning timing. The
student will gain experience analysing large datasets as well as practical
hands-on experience conducting manipulative experiments using
state-of-the-art aquarium facilities. Experimental tank experiments will be
carried out in collaboration with Dr Jamie Craggs at the Horniman Museum
and Gardens in London.

Eligibility: Applicants are expected to have at least a 2:1 undergraduate
degree in ecology, zoology, biology or appropriate fields. In addition,
candidates may also hold or be completing a Masters degree in a relevant
subject discipline but this is not a mandatory requirement. Excellent
quantitative and analytical skills are essential and willingness to learn
coral aquarium husbandry techniques. Experience working with large
datasets, laboratory or aquarium experimental experience and an interest in
coral biology are highly desirable. Experience of coral reef research is
beneficial, but a diving qualification and field work experience are NOT a
requirement for this project.

Home and International students (inc. EU) are welcome to apply. There are a
limited number of International awards available, and international
applicants may be required to provide additional fees not covered by the
UKRI Home fee contribution. Further information will be provided at
application stage.

Funding: Each of our studentship awards include 3.5 years of fees
(Home/EU), an annual living allowance (£15,285) and a Research Training
Support Grant (for travel, consumables etc)

Equality Diversity and Inclusion: ONEPlanet is committed to promoting
diversity, and we particularly encourage applications from
under-represented groups. Flexible study requests are welcomed, and will be
reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
