Dear Corallist,

How often were you asked about the impact of tourism on coral reefs? From where did you take the facts to answer this question? COVID-19 created an unique experimental set up where we can study our coral reefs in the absence of tourists and at low levels of tourism as tourists come back. This experimental setting is present on almost every reef worldwide and for this reason we decided to start a global collaborative study on this during Global Coral Reef Week (virtual conference www.coralreefweek.org<https://apc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.coralreefweek.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cdb7e0487377a49e9996a08d84fdac7c8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637347148352460354&sdata=UA3KAfv%2FMMecmFkvSNDy60cgQNwUoS9PjImaeDXiDQk%3D&reserved=0>). Currently there are 30 local collaborators interested in collecting data for this and you can join as well. If you are close to a coral reef and have time and capability to snorkel or dive out to it to conduct research every 2-4 weeks, then you can collect data for this study. You can also contribute to the study in other ways such as helping with writing grants, analysis data or in the writing up process of the scientific paper. You can find more information including the monitoring protocols on https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16HNJMTnVzhtZu1BFq5xXQqFNeVQH_3uJ?usp=sharing<https://apc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2Fdrive%2Ffolders%2F16HNJMTnVzhtZu1BFq5xXQqFNeVQH_3uJ%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cdb7e0487377a49e9996a08d84fdac7c8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637347148352470341&sdata=TfrdTgS%2Fbp1d0VZqTKc6lrDgCttrpPdm1%2Fn1YNc1zXk%3D&reserved=0>. We are meeting monthly via zoom and have a facebook group where you can introduce yourself and ask questions when they come up https://www.facebook.com/groups/342804143527881<https://apc01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgroups%2F342804143527881&data=02%7C01%7C%7Cdb7e0487377a49e9996a08d84fdac7c8%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637347148352470341&sdata=Qd3ZlMuf9NaJ4Syx9NMxAim4qFdacJGs9f8wsDMHeqM%3D&reserved=0>. Please join us if you are interested in this once in a life time research opportunity.
If you have any questions that cannot be answered by looking through the documents on the google drive or by writing on the facebook group then please contact Valerie Gregoire vg.valeriegregoire at gmail.com<mailto:vg.valeriegregoire at gmail.com>

Best,

Franziska Elmer
