Description:
The Traylor-Knowles Cnidarian Immunity Lab at the University of Miami
Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science has an exciting
opportunity for a full-time Post-Doctoral Associate.

Cnidarian Immunity Lab is part of a multi-institution large scale coral
cell biology project investigating “dark genes” in coral genomes, in
collaboration with Bhattacharya Lab at Rutgers and Cleves Lab at the
Carnegie Institute.

Specific duties include:

   - collaborating with the team to generate heat stress bulk and single
   cell transcriptomic datasets on several different coral species and
   functionally characterize different known and unknown (“dark”) genes using
   different molecular and cell techniques.


   - mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and will also benefit
   from a wide range of mentorship opportunities from the collaborating PIs of
   this project.


   - will lead publications and participate in other projects happening in
   the lab depending on skill set and interests.

Requirements:

-PhD completion before start time

-Extremely organized

-Able to work with a team

-Highly motivated and independently driven

-Good communication skills

-Great writing skills

-Ability to accept and integrate constructive feedback

Preferred skills:

-Experience with handling large data set analysis

-Proficient in R, Python, Github, and Bash

-Flow cytometry experience

-cell biology background

-coral and anemone husbandry experience

-scientific diving certified

*Research Associate/Lab Technician:*

The incumbent will provide laboratory technical assistance in the
Traylor-Knowles laboratory which focuses on the evolution of the innate
immune system in corals, sea anemones, and ctenophores.Specific duties
include:

   - Overseeing maintenance of lab equipment.
   - Husbandry of corals and anemones including feedings and tank
   maintenance.
   - Participating in collection of corals from local reefs.
   - Performing PCR, qPCR, cell biological techniques (cell culture etc.),
   bioinformatics, microscopy, histology, flow cytometry, and phylogenetics.
   - Assisting with ordering equipment and supplies for a molecular
   laboratory.
   - Conducting scientific writing and participation in the publishing
   process.
   - Maintaining organization of laboratories.
   - Will train students and incoming researchers as needed
   - Will update laboratory website with new information.

*Education Requirements (Essential Requirements):*

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (marine biology, environmental science,
earth sciences, ecology, biology, cell biology etc.) A Master’s degree is
preferred.  Previous training in molecular techniques outside of the
classroom is desired.

*Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:*

   - Interests in marine biology and research
   - Familiar with molecular techniques and practices
   - Organized and enthusiastic about research
   - Good interpersonal and communication skills
   - Ability to work in teams or independently depending on project
   - Familiarity with R and Python
   - Proficiency in excel
