Thumbs up, Bill. I think you hit the nail on the head. Many seem to think that if the issue of using renewables instead of fossil fuels can be solved, everything would be hunky dory. Meanwhile the major drivers, such as the issue that there are too many humans on Earth and that we spend trillions trying to save every person from death as long as possible linger un-tackled. 

The cheapest ways to save Planet Earth and ecosystems large and small is to provide free contraception to every woman on Earth, to subsidize the choice of very small family size, and to learn to accept that death is an essential part of life. Few organizations or NGOs tackle these problems seriously.  And one of the lowest hanging fruits is to tackle how our meat-based diet is destroying ecosystems by converting every possible square meter to industrial meat production or the fodder for these animals. Of course, loss of natural land for production of all the other commodities humans feel they must have for daily survival is another source of death-to-Earth. Energy from fossil fuels is just the means of achieving the above. The damage to Earth systems will be just as bad if they were to be supported by renewable energy (an industry with its own major impact on the global environment) if 100 % of the activities that we use fossil fuels for today go on unabated and continue to increase in response to increasing numbers of human customers.
