The Baum Lab (https://juliakbaum.org) seeks a highly qualified scholar to
apply to the University of Victoria's 2023 Aspiration Postdoctoral
Fellowship competition
<https://www.uvic.ca/research-innovation/postdoctoral-fellows/aspiration-post-doc-fellowship/index.php>
(deadline Jan. 15, 2023) to work on coral biodiversity under global change
as part of the new collaborative BIOSCAN
<https://ibol.org/programs/bioscan/> project. BIOSCAN is a new
international initiative to develop a global biosurveillance system of
biodiversity with emphasis on species discovery, interactions, and
dynamics. This project would focus on species interactions (coral
symbioses) in central Pacific coral reefs, and the influence of global
climate change and local anthropogenic stressors on these interactions. The
post-doc would focus their research on our long-term field site, Kiritimati
(Christmas Island), leveraging long-term coral microbiome and broader
ecological monitoring datasets in addition to collecting new field data
beginning in 2023. The post-doc would also have the opportunity to work on
other taxa or areas, and to help mentor and co-author publications with
graduate students. The successful applicant will have a solid background in
molecular ecology and be proficient at laboratory work, bioinformatics
pipelines, and statistical analyses, including experience coding in R
and/or Python. Scientific diving experience would also be an asset.
Competitive salary ($55,000 - $70,000 annum depending on experience and
successful Aspiration application, plus benefits), moving expenses, new
computer, opportunities to present at national to international
conferences, and research expenses covered. The successful applicant would
join a supportive and stimulating research environment, and be immersed
with a cohort of collegial post-doctoral researchers committed to
conducting cutting edge climate change impacts and solutions research, to
science outreach, and to enhancing diversity and inclusivity in STEM. UVic
is one of Canada’s top comprehensive universities, has vibrant ecology and
climate change research communities, and is located on gorgeous Vancouver
Island, British Columbia. Please contact Prof. Baum (baum 'at' uvic.ca)
with your expression of interest, CV, and references to be considered.
