Dear listers,

Please see this call for signatures below - on the basis of how this originated we are focusing it on scientists (apologies to the many other professionals, activities and others on this list), but just don’t have the bandwidth for more right now.

We are a global cross-section of biodiversity scientists and other researchers urging countries to resist all pressures to weaken the ambition of the Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity, being finalised at COP15 by 19 December 2022 in Montreal Canada. When this message is sent to you we number over 350 [please update this number!!] signatories from 47 countries, and counting.

We have  prepared a statement urging that the 2030 deadline is not abandoned in the COP15 negotiations, and that ambitious quantitative targets on reversing biodiversity decline, reducing pressures and addressing equity must be retained.

Many research articles document the need for such synergistic and ambitious action, and we want the voice of researchers to be heard more loudly through this call, which will be presented to the negotiating countries at critical points in the coming days.

Please join us by signing, and urgently circulating this call in your professional circles. We need all supporting signatures by Saturday and Sunday this weekend!!

Many thanks,

EJ Milner Gulland, David Obura, Mike Barrett

The paper that kicked off this call is one that I Iead, followed by convoluted discussion around ambition in the conservation community - https://www.cell.com/one-earth/fulltext/S2590-3322(22)00589-9
