POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT MARINE MICROBIOLOGY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
Position Title: Graduate Research Assistant
Location: University of Hawaii at Manoa, St. John Plant Science Lab, 3190
Maile Way, Honolulu, HI 96822
PI: Dr. Daniel Jenkins - Department of Molecular Biosciences &
BioEngineering
CO PI: Dr. Daniel Amato - Marine Biology Graduate Program
Starting Date: Spring 2022 Semester UH position #: pending
Minimum Starting Salary: Step 08 - $22,140 annual @ 20hrs per week (0.5%
FTE). Includes full tuition waiver and access to health care.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist with water sample collection at various coastal areas 2. Assist
with water sample preparation including DNA extraction in a Biosafety level
2 lab 3. Perform bacterial culture and DNA amplification experiments with
fecal indicator bacteria 4. Record and interpret results experiments 5.
Assist PI with development of new LAMP assays for fecal indicator bacteria
6. Assist PI with writing and publication of papers for journal submissions
7. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (MQs):
1. Must be a classified degree-seeking student in a MS or PhD program 2.
Must be in good academic standing and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above; 3.
Have some education or experience in Microbiology 4. Demonstrated
competency in general computer programs (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Word) 5.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines 6. Demonstrated ability to
communicate and work effectively with others 7. Interest in coastal water
quality and reef/human health
Desirable Qualifications:
1. Background in molecular biology, biotechnology, and/or bioinformatics 2.
Prior experience with LAMP or PCR 3. Prior experience with DNA extraction
from water samples 4. Prior research and data analysis experience 5.
Experience in a biosafety level 2 lab 6. Doctoral student
