3-year NSF funded Research Assistantship (Ph.D.)
Coral Chromatin and Epigenetics position at Dr. Jose Eirin-Lopez's Environmental Epigenetics Lab, Florida International University, Miami

The EELab (environmentalepigenetics.com) is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic, and independent student interested in developing a Ph.D. project investigating the role of chromatin structure and epigenetic modifications during coral responses to global change. This position is funded within the context of a Rules of Life grant awarded to Dr. Eirin-Lopez’s lab in collaboration with colleagues from other institutions (e5coral.org/). This position aims to strengthen our understanding of the role of epigenetic and chromatin regulatory mechanisms during coral phenotypic responses to environmental change. This position is exclusively laboratory-based, comprising molecular biology, biochemistry and bioinformatics methods, within complex eco-evolutionary contexts and building on samples actively collected during field experiments by collaborators.

Competitive candidates must have an M.S. degree in Biology or a related discipline (academic training in genetics, ecology, statistics, and evolution), be proficient in English (both spoken and written), and have a VERY strong hands-on experience in genetics biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics and R. Experience in chromatin methods (histone extraction and analyses, ChIP seq and ATAC seq is a PLUS). The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team is paramount for this position. Overall, this position constitutes a fantastic opportunity for a student to conduct cutting edge research in a very attractive field, supported by an excellent network of collaborators which includes coral biologists, ecologists and modelers.

This position is funded by an NSF Research Assistantship (36 months) and complemented by a Teaching Assistantship (24 months), although additional NSF-RA funding may be possible depending on future proposals. Interested students will be required to apply to the Graduate Program in the Dept. of Biological Sciences at FIU (http://biology.fiu.edu/graduate/). The tentative start date for this position is AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. In order to be considered, qualified candidates must submit a statement of interest, curriculum vitae, unofficial transcripts (GPA scores), GRE scores, TOEFL scores (if applicable), and a summary of research interests in a single PDF file to Dr. Eirin-Lopez (jeirinlo at fiu.edu). Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

Successful candidates will be based at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami, home to the Marine Science Program (marine.fiu.edu). Florida International University (fiu.edu) is Carnegie-designated as “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity”. FIU has 11 separate colleges and more than 40 centers, facilities, labs, and institutes that offer more than 190 programs of study, including professional school programs. Located in the heart of the dynamic south Florida urban region, our multiple campuses serve more than 50,000 students, placing FIU among the ten largest universities in the nation. FIU is a member of the State University System of Florida and is an Equal Opportunity, Equal Access Affirmative Action Employer.
