[Coral-List] global sea turtle take is on the decline, but still very large

Sea turtles are often found around coral reefs of course, particularly some
species like greens and hawksbills.

Sea turtles swim easier as poaching declines

But still, almost all species are endangered and the poaching is still on a
massive scale. This new report also doesn't evaluate the dangers to
individual species. Last I knew, leatherback turtles were still in grave
danger. Other previous reports documented that where sea turtles are well
protected, they are increasing in population very nicely indeed. So strong
protection works really well and needs to be expanded.

There is lots of info online on the status of sea turtles, including
Wikipedia articles. The Wikipedia article on "sea turtle" says that there
are significant genetic differences between populations within a species,
and while some populations are increasing, other populations continue to be
in decline. See their table of which species are listed in which category
by the IUCN Red List and by the US Endangered Species Act. Wikipedia also
has an article on threats to sea turtles, and individual articles on each
of the species.

They are not out of danger yet, but great to see that total take is
decreasing. Thanks to all the great efforts by many countries,
organizations, and individuals.

Cheers, Doug
