The Biological Scientist will design and conduct experiments on deep-sea
corals, including research on feeding, growth, and reproduction, synthesize
results, and develop best practices for optimizing deep-sea coral growth in
captivity. The scientist will participate in field and laboratory research
studies.
*ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*
- Serve in a technical capacity for projects and point of contact for
coral propagation team in Gainesville, FL.
- Participate in field work at sea to collect and maintain corals for
husbandry
- Design and execute experiments in the lab and in the field
- Mentor graduate and undergraduate students
- Utilize programming codes (R, etc.)
- Utilize graphing software and a Geographic Information System (GIS,
QGIS) to produce graphics and maps for data visualization and metadata for
spatial information
- Plan and execute data management
- Conduct analysis needed to carryout portions of larger
cross-discipline investigations related to deep-sea coral biology, ecology,
and trophic dynamics
- Conduct analysis needed to complete manuscripts with the objective of
sharing project results with DOI and other partners and agencies
- Train, mentor, other team members on technical topics
- Apply knowledge, skills, and experience with data visualization to
develop peer-reviewed publications, high quality science products and
graphics, and scientific presentations.
- Manuscript writing with role as lead author
- Coordinate with federal, academic, and NGO partners
- Will need to access government servers to complete the deliverables.
