Mariculture for the Planet

Want to help clean up the planet? Learn how to reduce climate change, ocean acidification, toxic algae blooms, and ocean dead zones AND feed people at the same time!  Learn how to sustainably culture and farm good tasting tropical oysters and marine algae in one of the most biologically diverse locations on earth. Farming these foods will help reduce human dependency on energy- and resource-intensive land-based foods, improve water quality, and promote biodiversity. These techniques and concepts are applicable around the world and can be used to help indigenous people feed themselves and add to their income, while helping the planet at the same time. Join us in the Bocas del Toro islands, Panama, for a hands-on, short course in Sustainable Tropical Mariculture. See and experience still healthy rain forests, coral reefs, and mangrove forests, while learning how you and the rest of humanity can slow climate change and reverse the massive biodiversity losses the world is now facing. Daily debriefings will take place to discuss the day’s events. Snorkeling is not required (but is recommended) to enroll in or carry out independent projects in this course. For those snorkeling, students are expected to bring mask/fins/snorkel. A wide range of group or independent research projects are possible with this course.
