POSITION SUMMARY:

- To assist with research programmes conducted under the direction of the Research Director
- Assist in all logistical planning, preparation, execution, and clean-up efforts of research programme activities under the guidance of the Research Technicians and Research Manager
- To be a resource to any and all visiting research scientists
- Assist with education, operations, and advancement/communications programmes as required
- Internship will focus on the resilience of corals to climate and will include assessing thermal performance of corals across life stages and improving coral restoration success.
- This project is in collaboration with Hollie Putnam (URI), Yvonne Sawall (BIOS) and Samantha de Putron (BIOS). Selected intern will travel with Dr. Gretchen Goodbody-Gringley to Bermuda to assist with thermal performance projects at BIOS for 2 – 3 weeks in August. Selected intern must have a valid passport that enables open transit between the US and UKOTs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Your internship will entail working with a vibrant and dynamic group of educators and scientists. Your responsibilities include the following:

- Selected intern will be expected to complete a project report on a portion of the work conducted during the internship with the goal of publishing results in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
- Assist with execution of a 12-day field course taught by Goodbody-Gringley and visiting scientist, Tali Mass (Univ. of Haifa).
- Assist in the delivery of research programme activities, including field and laboratory activities, all research related scuba dives, and coral restoration activities.
- Enter data and organize spreadsheets
- Attend weekly meetings with research team and station staff
- Analyse data when necessary
- Give at least one public presentation on focus research area
- Conduct tours of the station
- Contribute to the successful operation of a busy, remote field research and education station
- Contribute to outreach when needed and provide relevant imagery to the advancement team for publications and social media

QUALIFICATIONS:

- Preference given to Caymanian applicants or those with qualifying residential status
- Applicants must be certified to dive, Advanced diver preferred. Preference given to applicants that are currently AAUS scientific divers.
- Applicants must have completed some undergraduate education. - Completion of bachelor's degree or higher preferred.
- Experience with data handling required, including some experience with statistical analyses, R preferred.
- Must be versatile and willing and interested in assisting with a variety of tasks.
- Must be comfortable in and on the water, particularly on boats.
- Experience in coral reef ecological research and reef surveys preferred.
- Good communication and analytical skills required.
- Experience in coral and fish identification, environmental awareness, interest in conservation all a plus.

TERM & REMUNERATION:

Position is for 6 months, beginning June 19, 2023. Compensation towards travel to the Cayman Islands (if relocating) will be provided as well as room and board at the Little Cayman Research Centre provided plus living expenses up to $500 USD/month.
