About this exciting opportunity

The Australian Institute of Marine Science's National Sea Simulator
(SeaSim) is a world-class marine research aquarium facility for tropical
marine organisms in which scientists can conduct cutting-edge research.
Using SeaSim, Australian and international scientists can research the
impact of complex environmental changes with large, long-term, experiments
in which they can have fine control over key environmental variables such
as light, temperature, acidity/pCO2, salinity, sedimentation and
contaminants.

A key member of our SeaSim team, our Diet Technician will assist in the
culturing of a range of live feeds (including Artemia, rotifers, copepods
and microalgae) for feeding reef organisms and the provision of live feeds
to marine organisms in our SeaSim research facility. This will be a broad
role managing the facilities feeding activities which includes working on
sampling and routinely measuring physicochemical properties of microalgal
cultures (pH, temperature and nutrients), preparing stocks of media,
reagents and consumables and performing microscopic observations and health
diagnosis of cultures. You will also support the team lead in the
implementation of a program of water quality sampling, and conduct sampling
and water quality analysis and recording accurate results to ensure
successful operations within the facility.

About you

You will have substantial experience in the culture of a wide range of
organisms used in the aquaculture industry (Artemia, rotifers, copepods and
microalgae), supported by your degree in Science, Aquaculture, Aquatic
Biology, Microbiology or equivalent experience. Your laboratory practice
skills will be well established, and you will have proven experience in
isolating and culturing microalgae using aseptic (or sterile) techniques,
microalgal cultivation and media preparation.

You will be comfortable working in a fast-paced, result-oriented
environment, with proven ability to adapt to changing priorities and
creatively solve problems. Your well-developed communication skills enable
you to interact effectively with a diverse range of facility users,
including team members and collaborators.
