[Coral-List] predicting coral extinction risk

I believe I've found a small error in this article. In 4.3 it states
"First and foremost, the
assessment by Carpenter et al. (2008) used reef area as a surrogate
for population trends." I don't think that reef area was used at all.
Instead, population trends were estimated using Clive Wilkinson's estimates
of coral decline in different areas of the world's oceans. He gave a
figure for how many scientists he had talked to, to reach those estimates.
Clive had led the effort to put out GCRMN (Global Coral Reef Monitoring
Network) reports on the status of the world's reefs. Carpenter made the
assumption that any one species's trends over time could be estimated based
on the trends of the reef areas it occupied. Back then there was no other
way to estimate individual species trends, so this was the best available
science on the subject at the time.
This may not affect the overall argument the paper makes. Cheers,
Doug
