Paul,

It’s just a lot easier in our sites to collect samples of anything rare and
move it out into cooler waters than to shade a specific reef area.  But a
nearshore nursery can be shaded, as they are compact and easier to shade
than to move.  We do have some nearshore nurseries, but they are "stress
test" nurseries, so we want the corals to be exposed to the full light and
heat, to show us if they are indeed bleaching resistant, and if not we
retire them.  One time we had a workshop in the midst of a bleaching event,
and so we made a nursery fitted with underwater shade cloth over the top,
to prevent the corals from getting "burned bums", what we call it when
their sides or bottoms change orientation and get burned from exposure.  It
worked superbly and now we are able to establish new nurseries year round
without worrying about the corals suffering badly.

As far as your question on mid depth refuges, the lagoons and nearshore
areas where we work with bleaching resistant corals don't have much in the
way of mid depth reefs, as such areas are dominated by rubble and sand.
But on our barrier reef, there must be such mid depth populations and
refuges due to being in less light and less heat.  But these populations
will be cool adapted, so even if they survive, they are perhaps a dead end
for inherited resilience?  Or perhaps they might host species not found in
the nearshore, which could be important, and they might also provide a
larval source that can then get inoculated with the super algae of the
bleaching resistant corals we are establishing on the outer reefs?

After we get the hot pocket corals collected and secured in a site and
within cooler water nurseries, we then turn our efforts to seeking out and
sampling extra large Acropora colonies- whatever we estimate to be >22
years old, and thus the survivors of all three main bleaching events Fiji
has experienced.  Because these corals are located in cooler waters, we
predict that the chances of the resilience being coral tissue based, rather
than symbiont based, will be higher.  We need to search out both sources of
resilience- polyp and symbiont, to secure them within the nurseries and
restoration patches if possible, increasing their abundance and
reproductive potential.
